Tony Scott, a distinguished jazz clarinetist who in the 1950s helped steer his instrument out of the swing era and into the sax-infested waters of bebop. With Buddy DeFranco, Mr. Scott was considered one of the leading bebop clarinetists. (The two men were often described as the only major clarinetists to take on bebop, a style thought to be incompatible with the instrumenta€(TM)s soft, sweet sound.)

In a rarefied space, Joe Locke continues to evolve, engage and impress. There simply isn’t another vibraphonist of his generation with Locke’s stellar chops, thorough understanding of history/tradition–not just of jazz, but of music, period–and ability to build programs based on thematic concepts that not only stand out in his gradually growing discography, but fit contextually within it to create an actual oeuvre, an ever-expanding body of work that represents an artist whose number one priority is always the music–always the song. In the last year, since signing with MotA(C)ma Music, Locke has released Signing (2012), the forward-looking studio follow-up to his incendiary Live in Seattle (Origin, 2006), with the energetic and electric Joe Locke / Goeffrey Keezer Group, and Wish Upon a Star (2013), his ambitious, largely balladic orchestral record with Lincoln’s Symphony Orchestra that presented yet another side to this unerringly inventive vibraphonist’s artistry…

Bassist m: Ray Brown did a « Some Of My Best Friends Are… » series of recordings for Teldec shortly before his abrupt death in 2002. That bassist Colin Trusedell has chosen the same theme for his leader debut Some Of My Best Friends Are…Divas is the most auspicious thing about his release. What makes this disc one of the finest released in 2013 is its vacuum-lack of pretension and its critical- mass realized with musicianship. Nevermind that the recital includes the oft-cited « Summertime » and « My Funny Valentine, » here these warhorses breath anew, deftly lacking any sepia tones or shellac pops (not that those are bad…)…

The collaborative combo Confusion Bleue is a rare a phenomenon on the contemporary jazz scene. Neither that the group utilizes sound snippets, nor that all their music is entirely improvised. confers on them a singularity. It is, however, the collective ability of its members to create intricate, highly orchestrated and profoundly moving pieces on the spot that makes the ensemble unique. The results are colorful tapestries of various influences which, far from difficult listening, are in fact quite melodic, atmospheric and accessible…
